MCPU Product · Honey Bee®

Reactive soy-based polyols and modifiers for resilient, lower-carbon polyurethanes.

What it is

Honey Bee® is MCPU's family of reactive soy-derived polyols and modifiers. Unlike blended bio-fillers, Honey Bee® molecules carry primary hydroxyl functionality that participates in the urethane reaction — yielding bio-content without sacrificing tensile, tear, or compression set.

Key benefits

  • USDA BioPreferred-eligible renewable carbon content.
  • Primary OH for fast, predictable reactivity.
  • Evaluated at up to 30–40% of the polyol B-side in flexible and semi-rigid development work.
  • Improves resilience and compression set in flexible foam.
  • Cleaner smell profile than crude vegetable-oil polyols.

How it works (chemistry overview)

Honey Bee® polyols are produced by epoxidation of soy triglycerides followed by ring-opening with mono- and di-functional initiators, placing reactive primary hydroxyls at predictable sites along the fatty-acid chain. The result is a controlled-functionality polyol with predictable equivalent weight rather than an uncontrolled bio-blend.

Applications

  • Flexible slabstock and molded foam (furniture, bedding, automotive seating)
  • Spray polyurethane foam blended with petro-polyols
  • CASE — coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers
  • Reactive modifier in rigid PIR formulations

Sustainability profile

Renewable bio-carbon content; lower cradle-to-gate CO₂e vs equivalent petro-polyol; compatible with USDA BioPreferred procurement requirements.
